Qanon, Et Al.

I have been surprised, and disappointed, by the plethora of conspiracy theories so prevalent in today’s social media – and Washington politics. The saddest part, for me, is that I can no longer assume people are unquestionably rational. I was always willing to consider emotion as a wild card in obfuscating reason, but I never imagined that logic might be so blithely disregarded for pure make-believe.

I’ve speculated that the preponderance of fantasy in the entertainment industry might have predisposed people to legitimize the absurd, but I now believe that’s it’s more the symptom than the cause. No, the world wide web has freed humanity from responsible opinion and personal accountability, and so now we’re all sliding off our civilized foundations into an angry and fearful, but most of all irrational, brave, new world.
